Bus picks up

YORK'S travelling maths bus is set to take to the road for hundreds more journeys after receiving a £25,000 funding boost.

The computer bus, developed by the Heworth-based organisation, Mathemagic, has become a familiar site at stops around the city, offering a drop-in service for all ages.

The £25,000 grant won by City of York Council's library service, which supports the bus, will be spent on targeting young people in a project called Learning Through Games.

Its aim will be to encourage "disaffected" young people to play on computer games on the bus, to develop communication skills, confidence and regular attendance.

Once this is achieved the project hopes to persuade the young people to think about other learning options.

Alison Jones, project co-ordinator, said: "We are very pleased to be working in partnership with Mathemagic's ComputerBus to provide innovative and effective routes to learning for young people most in need of an accessible alternative.

"Offering something which really works for them as individuals has the potential to hugely increase their options in life, improving things not only for them, but ultimately for all of us."

The grant came from the BT Lifelong Learning Awards, part of the BT Education Programme.

Meanwhile, King James's School in Knaresborough has also won £25,000 from the BT Schools Awards, to pay for a project called Knaresborough Schools TV.

Pupils from different schools will work together to run their own TV station and produce a library of short videos.

ICT equipment will be used to edit movies and digital projectors will be used to view the videos and the cash will also pay for large screens.

Richard Hamer, programme co-ordinator, said: "The online awards programme opens up opportunities for UK schools to share their teaching skills and broaden the scope of current school projects.

"We are delighted to be able to help a number of schools each term and wish King James's School the best of luck as they begin their project."
