THE street sign for Spurriergate is misleading for visitors. It is also mounted on the wrong side of the street, and would be more readily visible if placed on the redundant church opposite - especially as the awful building where it is at present is due for demolition.

Many confused visitors can be found at the corner of Spurriergate and Low/High Ousegate earnestly consulting often inadequate street maps, wondering where they are, as Coney Street is the only name appearing on the map due to size and lack of space, giving the impression that this is the name for the whole street.

While I do my best to inform them of the difficulty when in town, I feel it could easily be corrected by amending the sign to read "Spurriergate - leading to Coney Street and Lendal."

Despite a request to the city council to address this problem, I am advised that this is not possible due to the lack of funds available for such projects. Surely the change would greatly benefit visitors and residents alike for many years to come, and be extremely cost effective for the moderate outlay involved?
