URUGUAY are on top of the world after the Evening Press World Cup for Kids.

Skipper Scott Nicholas, who netted one of the goals in their 2-0 final victory over Argentina, hoisted the Evening Press World Cup For Kids aloft as the six-week long tournament reached a thrilling climax at the University of York yesterday.

The tournament, sponsored by McArthurGlen (York) Designer Outlet, saw youngsters from local teams adopt the names of countries in the World Cup proper.

Uruguay were represented by Sky Blues while Caxton United flew the flag for Argentina in a tight final.

Nigeria (Dunnington) took third place by beating Brazil 5-1.

Leading tournament goalscorer Karl Richardson, of Brazil (Kirkbymoorside) won the Golden Boot award with 16 goals, while his team took the Fair Play Award.

The World Cup For Kids trophy, winners' plaques, losers medals and certificates to all players were presented by Evening Press Sports Editor Martin Jarred while Steve Lydiatt, of McArthurGlen, presented the Golden Boot and Top Manager awards.

The award for quickest goal of the competition went to Germany (Sporting Gaviota) player Peter Duggan, who netted after 22 seconds in the 6-3 victory over England (Hamilton Panthers).

The man of the match award in the final went to Argentina's Liam Simpson, who received a giant football from the Donnay store manager at McArthur Glen. He also gave members of the winning team a training ball each.
