RAINBOWS from York got together for a big fun event at a Rainbow Day held in Osbaldwick Primary School, York.

The Rainbows, the section of Guiding for five to seven-year-olds, came together for a day of activities.

It included cooking biscuits, making jewellery out of pasta and following a treasure trail.

More than 200 youngsters turned up from across the south York area.

Myra Puckrin, spokeswoman for York's Rainbows, said: "It was a really good day and everybody had loads of fun."

Meanwhile, Cancer Care in York was being helped by a day of fundraising.

The Ask restaurant in the Assembly Rooms, in Blake Street, York, hosted a day dedicated to raising cash for the York Breast Care Group.

A total of £2,072 will be passed on to the breast care unit at York District Hospital.

The day included raffles and stalls selling goods from crafts to cakes and plants.

Group member Gillian Ward said: "I don't yet know how much we raised, but I think it was a very successful day.

"It was in such lovely surroundings and we had a lot of interest from people."

York College was open to the public in an effort to raise cash for the neighbouring St Leonard's Hospice.

The college, in Tadcaster Road, held a community fun day to make money for the hospice.

Activities, including children's games, a barbecue, stalls and a bouncy castle, were laid on to entertain the hundreds of visitors who went along to the college site.

A college spokeswoman said: "We like to do what we can to raise cash for charity and St Leonard's is one we like to help.

"It was an excellent day which a lot of people attended."

At the same time workers with York company Portakabin gave family and friends an insight into their work at an open day.

The Huntington-based employer put on exhibitions and displays of what the company does. Visitors were able to get hands-on experience by taking the controls of Portakabin's 40 ton cranes.

Entertainment, including games like human table football and bungee running, were also on offer.
