THE history of Clifford's Tower, York, is being recreated this summer with the arrival of a medieval countess bearing a grudge against the English.

The Scottish noblewoman, the Countess of Stathern, will revisit the monument every weekend until the end of October, to help visitors get to grips with its 700-year history. Her husband was taken hostage and imprisoned in the Tower in 1307. The countess was able to join him in jail at York to make his life more bearable.

Now professional re-enactor Shona Griffiths, who was born in Ayrshire, has taken on the role of the Countess and will reveal the finer points of medieval life.

Shona will help visitors get to grips with subjects ranging from 14th Century illnesses to medicines and foods of the age.

Nicola Bexton, English Heritage marketing manager, said: "Visitors are absolutely thrilled to be greeted by a medieval maiden. It's a really colourful and fun way to bring history to life."
