York City Rowing Club won six titles at their annual summer regatta on the Ouse where 130 crews competed in 36 events.

Rob Whitwell steered his crew of Dave Voss, Dan Beaumont, Jon Hipkin and Will Baker to the Regatta Trophy with an impressive win in the final of the men's senior three coxed fours.

In veteran handicap coxless pairs, Piet De Boer and Jon Whitmore rowed one of their best races to date when they beat Durham Amateur Rowing Club by one and a half lengths after giving them a three-length start.

Former Olympic and world champion oarsman Jamie McCleod did just enough work to beat Stamforth, of Whitby Rowing Club, in the final of the veteran handicap single sculls.

The YCRC women juniors kept up their tally of wins this year as Caroline Jones and Charlotte Richer won the senior four double sculls. Richer then went on to win the women's senior four single sculls.

Perhaps the surprise of the day was the York women's junior sculling squad's victory in the novice eights at their first attempt at racing in a sweep-oared boat after only two outings in this discipline.

Junior captain Morven Porteous, stroke for her crew, was ably backed up by Jenny Addison, Sarah Barker, Jessica Knowles, Freya Porteous, Camilla Selby, Kathryn Smith and Gemma Fletcher and cox Kelly Barker. Their victory augurs well for the future.

The prize-giving had a special touch this year when Judith Waters presented the Anfield Trophy to St Cuthbert's College Boat Club, the winners of the men's senior three eights. She is the daughter of Walter Anfield, who was a local jeweller, who, along with his brother, Alfred, presented the trophy to YCRC for the 1951 York Festival.

Crews from YCRC had some encouraging wins in the build-up to the women's Henley and Henley Royal Regattas.

The YCRC women put up a good performance at Peterborough, where they won the women's senior 2 coxed fours with the crew of Amanda Lockley, Ros Coke, Kate Fleming, Jenny Irvine and cox Sean Stephenson. Loretta Williams and Julia Markham won the women's senior 3 double sculls.

Charlotte Richer added to her growing trophy collection by winning the junior 16 single sculls.

Joe Fricker and Tom Flemming won both the men's senior 2 and senior 3 coxless pairs. Rob Drever Smith and George Scott were victorious in the men's senior 2 and senior 3 double sculls.

Fricker and Flemming, along with Phil Press and Paul Richardson, have entered the Silver Goblet (coxless pairs) at Henley. Scott and Drever Smith have entered the quad sculls.

Men's captain Stuart Clarke along

with his brother Dan, Mick Homa, Chris Jones, and cox Simon Woodfine hope to compete in the Britannia Challenge Cup.

On the veteran scene, Ann Homa won a silver medal in the women's veteran 'A' single sculls at the Veterans' National Championships.
