THE father of tragic York backpacker Caroline Stuttle has put the final touches to a poignant painting of York Minster.

Artist Alan Stuttle is to give the painting to the Mayor of the Australian town where his daughter was killed.

Mr Stuttle, 63, said it was a fitting thank-you to the people of Bundaberg for all the help and support they have shown his family in the wake of 19-year-old Caroline's death in April.

Caroline, a former York College student, died after falling from a bridge in Bundaberg following a suspected attack by a mugger. Australian detectives are still trying to trace her attacker.

Mr Stuttle said that he and his son Richard are hoping to visit Bundaberg next month when they will hand over the painting to Mayor Kay McDuff.

He said: "I thought it would be nice to say thank-you from all the people of Yorkshire by taking a painting to the Mayor of Bundaberg.

"Caroline was very fond of wild flowers so I have put some in, I have also put in the West Front of York Minster. Caroline used to cycle so there is a bike in there and also the Union Flag, St George's Cross and the Australian flag. It is a form of healing to paint or put your emotions down on paper. This painting is part of that.

"It is something from York and something only I could have done, a father's grief."
