AN Indian High Court judge has given North Yorkshire arms dealer Peter Bleach more time to pursue his claim that he is being discriminated against by the Indian Government.

Justice A K Ganguly, of the Calcutta High Court, granted Bleach until July 9 to reply to affidavits filed by the Indian authorities. The affidavits are the authorities' response to a petition filed by Bleach in which he alleged discrimination by them.

Bleach is still in jail for his part in an arms drop in Purulia in 1995, while five Latvians also involved in the arms drop, who were also imprisoned, have been free since 2000.

They were freed after a personal plea on their behalf by the Russian President, Vladimir Putin.

Bleach claims the difference in treatment is discriminatory.

He told the judge he had not been able to prepare his reply to the affidavits because he had been bedridden from "viral fever" for the past two weeks.

The hearing of the petition was fixed for July 12.
