STAFF who work on the frontline and behind the scenes of the health service will be celebrated across the country as part of NHS Week which begins on Monday.

NHS Week 2002 celebrates the founding day of the NHS on July 5, 1948, and this year marks steps to involve patients in every aspect of healthcare.

A spokeswoman for York Healthcare NHS Trust said it was the ideal time to recognise the work that takes place behind the scenes.

She said: "Staff are very proud of the progress which has been made at York District Hospital during the last year.

"A major modernisation scheme is underway which the trust is very excited about.

"There's been huge development of facilities working hand in hand with Selby and York Primary Care Trust.

"The NHS is not just about doctors and nurses, this week will highlight the other work that is being done behind the scenes."

Next week also sees a drug and alcohol awareness in the Selby district to raise awareness about drug and alcohol issues and to offer young people the chance to try out alternative activities such as football, cricket, dancing and computers.

The week is being co-ordinated by a number of organisations including Selby and York Primary Care Trust, Selby District Council and Selby Drug and Alcohol Reference and include three free information evenings.

The first is on Monday at the Riley Smith Hall, Westgate, Tadcaster, the second on Wednesday at Eversley Park Centre, Low Street, Sherburn-in-Elmet and the third is on Thursday at Selby Town Hall, York Street, Selby. They all start at 7.30pm until 9pm.

The week ends with a fun day at Selby Abbey Leisure Centre on Saturday, July 6.
