HOLLYWOOD legend Paul Newman, who donated £1,000 to Lidgett Grove School in York, has sent more cash to another local good cause.

This time Boston Spa-based Martin House children's hospice, which serves the York area, has benefited after it received a cheque for £4,000 from the actor and director's charitable food company, Newman's Own.

The money, which will be used to purchase two suction machines for teenage patients, was handed over by Thomas Indoe, from Newman's Own Trust. Also present was Iris Morgan and Alison Williamson, from Uniq sauces, which is the manufacturing arm of the Trust.

The donation came about because Guy Gordon, of Asda in York, which sells the sauces, recommended that the hospice benefit from the sales.

Newman's Own, which produces salad dressings and pasta sauces, has donated millions of pounds to charities in the U.S. and abroad since it was launched 20 years ago.

Lidgett Grove School received a £1,000 cheque after Mr Indoe popped into the Blue Bell pub, in Fossgate, while he was visiting the city, and noticed a sponsor form on the bar.

Landlord Jim Hardie is cycling from London to York to raise money for Lidgett Grove School in Acomb and York District Hospital's children's ward.

The cheque, together with T-shirts and baseball caps arrived at the pub from the United States within days.
