ON a recent visit to Canada I sampled a ride on a most environmentally friendly mode of transport - our dear old friend the humble electric tramcar.
While gliding through the streets of the city of Toronto on one of these magnificent vehicles, I read the following official notice: "One person clean air commuting by Toronto Transit Commission streetcars instead of by car keeps nearly one ton of pollutants out of the air each year. Thank you". This notice sums up the situation facing us all. Say no to the motor car and yes to the tramcar!
