JUNIOR members of a York football team took a break from pre-season preparations to see the museum exhibit that inspired their team name.

The Elvington Harriers were named after the Hawker Harrier displayed at the Yorkshire Air Museum at Elvington.

The name was chosen after the team held a competition in local schools to name the team, with the winning entry inspired by the museum's links to the village.

Museum staff said they wanted to wish the team all the best for next season and so invited them along to see the Harrier.

"We hope it is a lucky omen for them," said spokesman Ian Richardson.

Team secretary Steve Gent said the players had enjoyed their trip to the museum.

"The team and the museum like to scratch each other's backs wherever we can and so it was nice to go up there and see the Harrier, the lads enjoyed it.

"Hopefully this is the start of a good season for us."

Elvington Harriers are looking for players in their 11, 13, 15 and 17 teams for next season. Anyone interested should ring Steve on 01904 608638.
