Beverley-born Paul Robinson is set to oust Nigel Martyn as Leeds' first-choice goalkeeper next season. And that could see Martyn on his way out of Elland Road after six seasons.

Robinson was one of the stars of England's Under-21 European Championship campaign but knows he needs regular first team football if he is to make the step up to Sven Goran Eriksson's squad.

The 6ft 4in, 14st 21-year-old impressed the England boss when he stood in for the injured Martyn during Leeds' Champions League campaign two years ago, especially his display in their 1-0 win over Lazio in Rome.

But with Martyn ever-present in the Leeds side last season, Robinson became increasingly frustrated at warming the bench.

Robinson knows he faces stiff competition from Liverpool's Chris Kirkland to take over as England keeper when David Seaman retires, and is likely to ask for a move if he is not given his chance this season.

Leeds are desperate to raise cash and realise that this is the best time to release Martyn, who would probably raise around £4million. Releasing Martyn would not upset the fans. In an unofficial poll on the Leeds website, 60 per cent voted for Robinson to be given his chance while only 19 per cent wanted Martyn, the rest voting for rotation.
