CHILDREN from York and North Yorkshire schools are invited to help dig for hidden treasures at a medieval hospital site.

Summer workshops are being held at the site, the former St Leonard's Hospital, in the Museum Gardens, York, for children aged six to 16.

They are being run by York Archaeological Trust (YAT) and City of York Council's Department of Educational Services. The classes will offer children the chance to sieve earth for small artefacts and cleaning and sorting pottery.

Museum visits have also been planned.

Dr Andrew Jones, head of education at the trust, said: "We have been running courses for young people over the age of 16 all summer, and we thought it would be great to give children and other young people the chance to have a go at archaeology.

"All the activities will be supervised by trained teachers and experienced archaeologists from YAT."

Pre-booking is essential. To reserve a place, or for more information, ring Sylvia Bowen at the trust on 01904 663000 or email sbowen@yorkarchaeology.co.uk
