THE way ahead for church schools was the subject of the annual education conference in the diocese of York.
The conference, attended by teachers and governors from 126 Church of England schools took place yesterday at York Racecourse. Lord Dearing, whose working party produced the report The Way Ahead almost a year ago, spoke on Perspectives On Faith Schools. The Archbishop of York, Dr David Hope, stressed that faith in education was all about unity.
"The conviction of our faith in education does not imply conflict." said Dr Hope.
"Indeed, the opposite is true and I agree with the Chief Rabbi who has talked about honouring the dignity of difference."
Children from St Mary's CE Primary School in Askham Richard and Manor CE School, York, put on performances during the day. The conference ended with a question session to Lord Dearing, Linda Rockey, a Birmingham head teacher, Jenny Vickers, assistant education director with City of York Council, and the Rev Andrew Martlew, York Diocesan director of education.
