DETECTIVES investigating the death of York busker Tony Grayson are looking for two van-dwellers who may hold the key to their investigation.

Police officers in Colchester, Essex, would like to speak to the pair - known as Fran and Di - who are thought to be acquaintances of Mr Grayson.

It is believed the couple were occupying a red van parked near the Castle Park area of the town where Mr Grayson and a friend were beaten by three men on the weekend of May 25.

Mr Grayson, 38, a known member of York's drug-using community, was found dead on the floor of the flat he shared with fiance Jackie Dawson in George Street, York, on June 4.

A murder-style inquiry was launched after a post-mortem investigation revealed evidence of internal injuries consistent with being kicked in the body - possibly some days before.

Police said Fran and Di were using the van, which they may own, between May 23 and May 28 and may know something about the attack. The van's registration number and make are unknown.

An Essex Police spokesman said: "Fran and Di were known to the victim and his friend.

"We have done lots of house-to-house calls in the area and we really need to speak to these people as they may hold important information."

Earlier this week detectives launched a poster campaign across York urging people to come forward and help them.

Areas targeted with the posters include Museum Gardens, Scarborough Bridge and St George's Field, all places where Mr Grayson was a common sight busking with his dog.
