NEW proposals to ban cars from Helmsley's Market Place and introduce a 20mph speed limit on some roads in the town are set to be put to the public.

But some market traders have already raised fears that the plans - which could clear the town centre of cars - could damage trade.

North Yorkshire County Council has tabled a draft proposal to introduce lower speed limits in Carlton Lane and Ashdale Road, near the town's primary school.

Another proposal is to remove some or all of the parking from the Market Place, creating a large pedestrian area in the centre of town.

The issue will be discussed next Wednesday at the Ryedale Area Committee meeting at Sherburn village hall.

Committee members will be asked to approve plans to consult residents using a leaflet drop to homes and businesses.

Chris Bentley, who runs Castle Stores, in the town, said she was all for tighter speed restrictions.

"Something needs to be done about the speed of the traffic," she said.

"But if they ban cars from the Market Place it's vital they provide spaces elsewhere.

"The last thing we want is for Helmsley to turn into a ghost town and we don't want to lose what little trade we have.

"The car parking spaces will have to be moved to somewhere convenient so that people can walk into town."

Richard Otterburn, who owns Ryeburn Caf, in Helmsley, said banning cars from the Market Place could make the town more attractive.

"About 15 years ago they filmed Best Of Enemies here and cleared the Market Place of cars. It looked lovely," he said.

"They would have to create additional parking to make sure visitors can still park here.

"I would fully support any plans to reduce the speed limit, but, if it does go through, it has to be enforced for it to be worthwhile."
