CHILDREN will have the chance to demonstrate their artistic talents at the Art On Track! exhibition at the National Railway Museum today and tomorrow.

In celebration of National Children's Art Day 2002, youngsters visiting the museum will be able to unleash their creativity on a specially-designed giant 3-D train mural. The initiative, running across the country, aims to encourage children to engage with art in and out of school. Two professional artists will be present to focus the children's efforts, and the finished mural will go on temporary display.

Artist David Alcock said: "Children will complete each section in a variety of media, including paint, coloured corrugated cardboard, tin foil, glittery stars and even wadding to give it the 3-D effect.

"They will even be able to add their names to the mural."

The museum's education officer, Graham Relton, was also enthusiastic about the venture. "This is a great opportunity to bring children into contact with the national collection in an unusual way," he said.

"The story of the train is truly revolutionary and I hope that not only will the children learn something about their industrial and cultural heritage, they will also find the experience truly inspirational."

Art On Track! is open to children aged three to 13 years old between 11am and 5pm.
