I WAS pleased to read the feature by Adam Nichols "My home was destroyed, there was nothing left" (June 19). Its sensitivity to the issues faced by refugees moving to this country is certainly in the spirit of Refugee Week.
Refugee Week, which concludes tomorrow, celebrates the contribution of refugees to the UK and encourages people to look positively at the asylum issue in Britain.
The personal stories in your feature illustrate the extreme difficulties faced by people fleeing their own countries and communities and arriving in ours.
Asylum seekers and refugees coming to this country are fleeing persecution and violation of their human rights.
Amnesty International campaigns to promote human rights; free all prisoners of conscience; ensure fair and prompt trials for political prisoners; abolish the death penalty, torture and other cruel treatment of prisoners; end political killings and "disappearances"; and oppose human rights abuses.
If any of your readers are interested in promoting the work of Amnesty International UK, which includes campaigning for a fair and humane asylum system in this country, you are welcome to come to the local York group meetings.
The group meets every second Tuesday of the month at 7.30pm at the Friends Meeting House in Friargate.
