TWELVE-year-old Alice Sunderland from York City Baths Swimming Club is set to follow in her father's swimming strokes.

She has been selected for the Yorkshire and Humber Active Sports Talent Camp on June 29 and 30.

Along with her clubmates Hannah Petts, aged 11, and Rachel Eastaugh, aged 22, Sunderland will join over 1,000 other talented sporting youngsters from all over the region for the event.

They will come together for the first time for a weekend of coaching, lifestyle management, training and sports science. Basketball, athletics, girls' football, rugby union, rugby league, hockey, netball, and tennis are represented as well as swimming.

Alice's father Alan Sunderland, who is also coach at the club, was the Yorkshre men's backstroke champion in 1971.

His wife, Judy (ne Harris) also swam for the city's team.

Their elder daughter Katy, now 18, has twice been national age-group champion for butterfly.

Alan said: "Alice, Hannah and Rachel are great friends, and all are talented swimmers. We're delighted to have three swimmers going to the Talent Camp from our club, as it's a fantastic opportunity for them to develop in the sport and as young people."

Petts was placed first in the overall 10-year-old category award for Yorkshire and won seven individual titles, with Eastaugh placed second overall. Sunderland won two gold, two silver and one bronze, and came third overall in the 11-year-old age group.
