RESEARCHERS are calling for better understanding between motorists and bikers to cut down the number of road deaths on North Yorkshire's roads.

A new study, by motorcycle insurance specialists Bennetts, has shown that motorists in Yorkshire have difficulty spotting a motorbike on the horizon, knowing when to pull out from junctions when bikers are approaching, and driving without being affected by their presence.

The research indicated that this is the norm rather than the exception.

The Evening Press Arrive Alive campaign, which strives to curb the growing number of motorcyclists killed on North Yorkshire's roads, recently stepped up a gear after accidents claimed the lives of three riders in the last three weeks.

Government figures reveal that the region was one of the worst in the Yorkshire and Humber area for motorcycle accidents in 2000.

Seventeen riders were killed and 436 were injured.

That grim toll is rising again this year after a spate of recent tragedies.

Bennetts is calling for a "knowing me, knowing you" attitude to be adopted by both motorists and motorcyclists. The survey showed that many drivers thought riders were too aggressive at traffic lights and dangerously weaved in and out of traffic.

Many disliked the way bikers rode alongside them or right behind them.

Useful tips to promote better harmony between bikers and motorists have now been published.

Motorcyclists are advised to: not ride on the driver's tail, not to ride too close to the kerb or verge and to wear high-visibility clothing.

Motorists were urged to regularly use mirrors and wing mirrors, be more alert at traffic lights, and check for bikers when pulling out at junctions or roundabouts.

Superintendent Dave Short, of North Yorkshire Police, said better communication between motorists and bikers was essential.

He said: "It's important that bikers and motorists look out for each other. They've got a responsibility to work together."
