IN Turpin Rides Again Mike McCulloch castigated a Brighton magazine for making mistakes about the Battle Of Stamford Bridge (April 20).
In fact, the Norwegians landed at Ricall on September 20, 1066. The garrison at York, loyal to Harold, eventually sallied forth to do battle. They got a real drubbing and it is recorded that more people drowned in the river running away than were actually killed in battle.
They were chased all the way back to York where they eventually surrendered a few days later. Therefore any river trip downstream from York to Ricall "will cruise past places where Harold's men fought the Vikings in 1066"!
I think technically that the Archbishop is still the Bishop of York.
