A ROBBER jumped into a car which had stopped at a pedestrian crossing on a busy York road.
The attack was reminiscent of car-jacking, more commonly seen in London, and was believed to be the first incident of its kind in York.
The robbery happened just after 11pm last night when a young man driving along Fulford Road stopped at a crossing in Fulford village next to the Total garage.
A man in his twenties jumped into the passenger seat and told the driver to drive on. When he refused, the man punched him in the face.
The driver jumped out of the car, grabbed his keys from the ignition and ran for safety. When he later returned to the car, his mobile phone had been stolen.
Sergeant Colin Ventress, of York Police, said: "I am not aware of another incident like this happening in York. We would advise drivers to lock their doors if they are driving around at night."
The attacker is described as white, with dark hair and a split lip. He was wearing a white baseball cap.
