DRIVERS were delayed on the A1 after a Cleveland Police exercise left a vehicle broken down on the carriageway.
The incident happened just after 2pm yesterday when the van broke down near the junction of the A1 and the A59. Police were carrying out an armed escort exercise heading northbound.
According to North Yorkshire police spokesman Tony Lidgate, Cleveland officers requested help from North Yorkshire Police when the vehicle broke down. At first the officers tried to react as though the breakdown had really been a vehicle under armed escort. But it became clear that all the police activity was causing hold-ups and only one vehicle was permitted to stay behind with the van.
Cleveland police said all other officers made their way back to Cleveland and the exercise was halted.
