IN response to the letter from Sheila Hughes on the book of condolence in Guildhall for the Queen Mother, I do not agree that the book was "not very nice" and believe it was extremely tasteful with gold embossed lettering on the front cover.

It was similar to the one used following the death of Diana, Princess of Wales, which resulted in no complaints whatsoever.

Guildhall is being used throughout April to distribute bus tokens to pensioners in the city. Cancelling this, to place the book by itself, would have upset and inconvenienced a great many people.

The book of condolence was placed in Guildhall and in the shadow of a wonderful plaque marking the re-opening of the building by Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother after the Second World War; this seemed particularly fitting, given the circumstances.

Guildhall also allows disabled access unlike some other buildings in which the book may have been placed. The antique table and fresh flowers added to an area in which we saw many people share their thoughts on such an important figure for the citizens of York.
