York area riders figured strongly in the outcome of Velo Club York's ten-mile time trial on the demanding A168 Marton/Walshford course, despite being out of the top three places in the men's event.

Joel Wainman (Pete Read) was again pushed into second place, this time by Ackworth's Steve Wigglesworth (Vegetarian C & AC) who overcame the stiff north-easterly wind to had a superb time of 22min 27sec, which was 16 seconds faster than Wainman.

Richard Welburn (VC York) was the best the York contingent of riders with a highly respectable ninth place overall, after a determined effort produced a fine 24min 19sec ride.

Rob Osman was fastest of the 14-strong Clifton club entry, timing 25min 03sec.

Clifton's best results, however, could well be said to be Cath Tatlock's victory in the Women's event with a promising 28min 19sec ride, and 66-year-old Keith Richardson's excellent second place in the veterans' race, timing 26min 41sec to give a "plus" of 4min 34sec on "standard".

Knaresborough RT's top finisher was Oliver Pearce with 25min 00sec, closely followed by Jim Lee clocking 25min 26sec.

This was the second counting nominated even in Clifton's new seven-event Time Trial Championship Series. The next event in the series is the Teesdale CRC Mountain Time Trial over 38.5 very tough miles in the Barnard Castle Area, at 8.30am on Sunday April 28.

Other times:

VC York: Mark Burtonshaw (Howden) 25min 24sec, Paul Fairburn (York) 25-44.
