A YOUNG woman allegedly fled crying into the night without shoes or a coat after she was raped in a friend's spare bedroom, York Crown Court heard.

Simon Hickey, prosecuting, alleged that David Glen Atkin, 42, woke the 22-year-old woman up with his sex attack.

She had taken up his wife's offer to stay overnight at his house because her own house had no hot water.

"Just after midnight, in the early hours while she was alone, this defendant, say the prosecution, came into her bedroom and using his size and weight climbed on top of her and raped her," the barrister said.

He claimed that the woman was so distraught that after Atkin left her, she fled the house without her shoes or coat and went to York District Hospital.

A police surgeon and her GP allegedly later noticed bruises and cuts in the region of her hips and on her back.

Atkin, of Fountayne Street, The Groves, York, denies rape.

Giving evidence, the woman alleged that she said no to Atkin, but that he said: "You know you really want this," and forced himself upon her.

"I just wanted it over with. I couldn't believe what he was doing to me. I turned my head away and looked at the window," she said in the witness box.

After he left her, she waited petrified until the house was quiet, then got dressed.

"I just wanted to get out of the house," said the woman.

"It was so much like a dream, until I got out of the house and down the street and I started to cry."

She said that she tried to phone a friend, but was so upset she could not remember the number.

As she crossed the hospital car park making for home, instinct told her to go to casualty, where, she alleged, she told a nurse she had been raped.

Earlier, opening the prosecution, Mr Hickey said Atkin's wife, Caroline, invited the woman to stay overnight. The alleged victim and Atkin had been drinking separately during the evening.

After he got home, he behaved strangely towards the young woman and later, she thought he may have seen her getting undressed when she saw him looking into the spare bedroom.

Some time after falling asleep, she awoke to find Atkin "messing about with her legs" and his hands "all over her breasts", alleged Mr Hickey.

The trial continues.
