RECEIVERS have been called in to a farmer-owned grain trading company with a site in Pocklington.
Viking Cereals Limited, which is based in Lincolnshire, took the decision following substantial trading losses.
The company employs 22 staff. Almost 400 farmers, most of whom are believed to be from the Lincolnshire area, were part of the co-operative.
Rob Simpson, from the National Farmers' Union, said they were in the process of collecting names of individual farmers and cereal growers who may need assistance.
He said a team of legal experts had also been assembled to look into whether farmers would be liable for any of the debts incurred by the company.
Company chairman Mike Jackson said: "This situation is extremely regrettable for all those involved with Viking Cereals Limited, including its members and staff.
"The board will of course be co-operating with the receivers to look at how to enable any losses to the company's creditors and members to be minimised."
NFU director general Richard Macdonald said: "This situation is deeply regrettable for all involved.
"We would stress that this unfortunate situation in no way changes our belief in the need for farmers to collaborate."
He added: "We see this as very much a one-off and not an indication of the strength that collaboration confers."
Farmers who may need help are being urged to contact NFU Call First on (0870) 845 8458.
