WHEN I began to commute to work in York a year ago I decided to park my car at Askham Bar and use Park & Ride.
I was impressed by the simple and sensible concept of the system. Leave your car on the outskirts and travel in by cheap public transport.
So why am I now considering bringing my car into the city centre despite the increase in parking costs?
Because I can never guarantee that I will get anything like the regular bus service so proudly proclaimed on the bus stands in Rougier Street. At worst the frequency of a ten-minute service it says, and sometimes every six minutes.
Contrast this with my experience of overcrowded, infrequent buses on far too many occasions to be acceptable. My worst wait was one hour, with waiting times of 20 minutes and half an hour a regular feature. Some frequency!
Regular passengers know that school holidays, shop sales and mid-summer tourist levels increase passenger volume and badly disrupt services for passengers boarding at Rougier Street and beyond.
Why are traffic planners unaware, or incapable of dealing with this fact?
Enough is enough. Stick your Park & Ride service, it's all the way by car for me - hang the expense.
