A CARING brother was inspired to run tomorrow's London Marathon after his sister was diagnosed with breast cancer.

Tom Guthrie, 30, who has moved to the capital from his family home in York, decided to dust off his trainers and pound the streets for 26 miles to raise money for cancer charity Breakthrough, after being inspired by the bravery of his sister, Clare Peterken.

Clare, 32, who also lives in London, was diagnosed with the disease last year and has been undergoing intense chemotherapy treatment.

She recently gave birth to her daughter, Verity.

Parents Sally and Robin Guthrie, who live in Braeside Gardens, off Acomb Road, York, said they were "very proud" of Tom for running the marathon.

"He has never been much of a sportsman," Sally said.

"Since he decided to do it he has trained like mad.

"Clare thinks it's wonderful what Tom is doing - they've always got on, even as children."

Tom, who is a professional classical singer, has so far raised nearly £3,500 for the charity.

Sally added: "Clare has been wonderfully brave and positive since she was diagnosed - she is a great girl. Tom's marathon run makes a world of difference to her.

"We're just so thrilled at the generosity of people."

Robin said: "Obviously we're very proud of what he's doing - we just hope he survives it!"
