New Earswick Operatic Society leaves behind the hectic 21st century for the balmy atmosphere of Julian Slade's Salad Days at the Joseph Rowntree Theatre, York.

First performed in 1954, this whimsical musical presents a halcyon world of heady days at university and dancing in the park: days spent searching for a magical piano and encountering a space ship.

In a turnabout in the New Earswick modus operandi, regular leading lady Anne McCreadie switches to the producer's chair for the first time, taking over from Douglas Waft, who in turn will be appearing as a tramp, having retired from producing last year after 34 years. In Alfred Hitchcock tradition, Anne promises to sneak in a couple of cameo appearances.

Meanwhile, Jo Groom steps over the footlights to be choreographer, in addition to playing the role of Troppo the clown, and Don Pears will be leading the orchestra as ever.

New Earswick's light-hearted, nostalgic show can be seen from April 17 to 20 at 7.30pm nightly. Tickets: £7.50, £4 children, concessions; ring Mrs S Waft on 01904 768182 or York Theatre Royal box office, 01904 623568.
