YOUR lead article dealt with the poor conditions of some of our public toilets in the city over the Easter weekend (April 3). I acknowledge and regret that a problem did exist but action is being taken to make sure better systems are in place for the future.
Our in-house cleaning contractor experienced a number of unexpected staffing problems prior to Easter, of which we were not made aware, and this resulted in less cleaning than should have taken place.
Ensuring that adequate back-up arrangements are in place should similar problems happen in the future is something that is now being resolved. This will also include improved communications with those responsible for monitoring the cleaning contract so that they are fully aware of any operational difficulties and can assist in prioritizing cleans.
City of York Council does take the provision of good quality public conveniences seriously and is investing in a new toilet in Union Terrace coach/car park, which will be fully attended and maintained to the highest possible standard.
This level of service will be funded by making a small entry charge for all users.
