TODAY'S look-back at times past in York focuses on the history of Walmgate, the current home of the Evening Press.
These pictures are from 1933, and show side streets and yards from around the longest of York's "gate" streets. One theory behind the name of the street is that cattle and other animals were once driven down it to a meat market just outside the Bar. As they were killed, their innards were taken out, including the womb, hence "wombgate", and now Walmgate.
The main picture shows children playing in West's Yard, in School Street, enjoying the rare chance to pose for a photograph.
The picture below shows the hustle and bustle of life in Walmgate, at its junction with Albert Street, which no longer exists. The house pictured is Bowes Morrell house, commissioned to be built in 1396.
The house was restored in 1932, just before the photograph was taken, and is now an office for the Council of British Archaeology.
If anyone has information on the streets and yards mentioned, or think they may be in the photographs, please contact our newsdesk on 01904 653051.
Copies of pictures from the past can be ordered from the Evening Press Photosales department.
