AROUND 1940 the first packet of seeds I grew in my own garden were Russell Lupins. A picture of George Russell was on the back of the packet.
In 1964 I moved to Wigginton and discovered his memorial garden bed in Leeman Road in the Memorial War Garden. At that time, although interplanted with other perennials, it made a nice photo. Amateur Gardening published my article about it all.
Despite sending in a packet of Russell Lupin seeds, the bed is a poor sight and the metal part of the commemorative plaque appears to be missing. Sad.
