I FOUND the following passage in a York City Supporters Club handbook which illustrates the vast difference between the current board of directors and their predecessors.
It concerns the building of the Popular Stand at Bootham Crescent which was paid for and completed by the Supporters Club in 1937.
"The Supporters Club decided to accept responsibility (to build the stand). The stand cost £1,500 and the builder agreed to go ahead provided an initial £500 could be raised. This presented a problem as the Supporters Club had no collateral on which to raise such a loan.
"I (the handbook writer) mentioned this one day to Bill Leckenby, a director at the parent club at the time, and taking me to one side he said he would let the Supporters Club have the deeds to his house as security against the loan. This was a wonderful gesture on his part and on the strength of this the loan was granted by the bank."
Take note, Messrs Craig, Quickfall, Swallow and Webb.
