A GROUP of York teenagers are planning to turn an old tennis court into a skatepark.
B&K Skaters are working towards developing skating facilities in Rowntree Park, York.
Supported by council-funded York Youth Forum, the group is applying to City of York Council for planning permission in the next few weeks.
Rachel Deadman, of York Youth Forum, said: "The area will never be used as a tennis court again. It is totally unused. The reactions of local residents towards the proposals have been very positive."
The forum has just finished its first stage of consultation with residents in the area. But the consultation process will continue throughout the project.
B&K skaters, a group of eleven young people aged between 11 and 15, are currently working on fundraising ideas to be implemented if permission is granted. They are also contacting suppliers of skating equipment for quotes and information.
About 80 teenagers are on a mailing list for information about the progress of the skateboarding area. This larger group will get involved in raising money to fund the facilities if planning permission is granted.
Bishopthorpe Road resident Keith Chapman has been trying to get more leisure facilities for young people in the South Bank area for some time.
He said: "I feel so sorry for the kids around here. Without a doubt there is a need for another skateboarding park in York."
