GAS provider Transco has pledged to cause "as little disruption as possible" as it embarks upon a plan to replace a major gas main in Fulford, York.
The firm is to replace 540 metres of gas main on Heslington Lane, in a project costing £145,000.
The works are part of a £25 million package of improvements to gas supply systems across Yorkshire, during which the firm will replace old iron gas mains with modern plastic ones, which have a longer lifespan.
Work is expected to start on Monday and last for 20 weeks, when engineers will replace the 12-inch low pressure mains, and 16-inch medium pressure mains, with plastic pipes.
The streets affected are Heslington Lane, School Lane, Fulfordgate, Fenwicks Lane and Main Street.
A spokesman for the firm said engineers would use specialist techniques to reduce the need to dig trenches, by inserting the new pipe through the old one.
He said: "Motorists are advised that delays are possible, and that temporary traffic lights will be in force to control traffic levels."
Ruth Thompson, of Transco, said: "This is essential work, as it will enable us to maintain a safe and efficient gas supply system. Every effort will be made to keep disruption to residents and road users to a minimum and we will continue to liaise with local officials as work progresses. "
