A FAMILY from York today appealed for the owner of their new feathered friend to get in touch.
Their unexpected lodger is a canary, that is currently perched with Acomb man Joe Hinds, his wife, Janet, and their two youngest children, Jodie and Joe.
Joe, of Lown Hill, found the bird near football fields next to Poppleton Community Centre, in Main Street.
He thinks it has flown the coop from a nearby family home.
He said: "I saw it and at first I thought it was a yellowhammer, but I soon realised it was a canary. I thought I'd better take it in because a cat might get it, or in case the other birds attack it.
The canary rescue is not the first time the Hinds have taken a bird in, as last year they rescued a cockatiel.
Joe found the canary at about 9am on Sunday. If it is yours phone Joe on 01904 782500.
