A FORMER York vicar and chaplain for the deaf has died, aged 74.
The Rev Tom Preston died peacefully at his home in Castleton, near Rochdale, Lancashire, on March 7. He was vicar at St Deny's Church, in Walmgate, York, for 14 years until his retirement in 1993.
Mr Preston had also been administrator of York and District Deaf Society and the city's chaplain for the hard of hearing. An avid fundraiser, he led a sponsored walk of York's city walls in October 1992 to raise money for York Deaf Society.
Originally from Manchester, Mr Preston joined the ministry in 1964 after working in catering. He came to York from Hastings, East Sussex in 1980.
His wife, Audrey, died in July 2000. He leaves two daughters, Nadine and Lucinda, three grandsons, Matt, Ben and Thomas, and two granddaughters, Joanna and Rosie.
