Former Scottish winger Tony Stanger gave the St Peter's School rugby union team the benefit of his experience ahead of next weekend's trip to Twickenham.

And there could still be more big name stars to run the side through their paces ahead of the Daily Mail Schools Rugby Cup Under 15s final.

Leeds Tykes star Stanger, along with a number of coaches from across the region, was at the school as part of a coaching development day organised by North of England development officer John Lawn - with the Under 15s side used as coaching aides.

Stanger, famed for his Grand Slam-winning try against England in 1990, took the lads through counter-attacking play.

Director of sport at the school, Mike Johnson, said: "It worked well for both parties. It was good for the lads to be coached by Tony Stanger, while they needed people to be coached."

Johnson also revealed the school were hoping to have a former British Lion legend coaching the lads early next week, while an ex-England star is also lined up to help out before the final.

Meanwhile, St Peter's School and their opponents in the final, Outwood Grange, Wakefield, were involved in a superb sporting gesture during an historic day at the RFU development centre at Castlecroft.

The two schools had travelled down to Birmingham for their respective semi-finals of the competition but in a bid to see an all-Yorkshire final - the first-ever in the competition - at Twickenham on March 24, the two sets of pupils cheered each other on during the day.

Outwood, who are traditional a rugby league school, were on first and the pupils and parents from St Peter's added their vocal support as the dual-code boys snatched a dramatic 22-20 victory with the last move of the match.

And when it came to St Peter's match against Mill-field, the large travelling contingent from Wakefield returned the complement and roared the York side to a 22-5 win.

But as well as a show of White Rose solidarity, it gave both schools the chance to cast their eyes over their rivals for the prestigious cup.

"We supported Outwood during their match and they returned the complement by cheering us on," said Johnson.

"It gave us a chance to look over them. They are traditional a rugby league school and have only been playing rugby union for a few years.

"They are a big, strong side with some big lads."

St Peter's have now been invited to the stadium to watch England v Wales on the Saturday before their final, which will kick off the following day at 1.45pm.

YORK are looking for someone to video their games to help with their training.

A number of clubs have now turned to recording their matches in order to pin-point the good and bad in their games - and York have decided to follow suit.

Matthew Emmerson, the club's player-coach, did the honours for the victory over West Park Bramhope as he was out injured.

But as he is now fit again, the former West Hartlepool flanker is after someone else to take up the role

He said: "I see the camera as a vital part of the professional environment I am trying to create at the club, as players can learn a lot from seeing themselves play, but at this level they rarely get the opportunity."

Any interested would-be cameramen or women can contact Emmerson on (07866) 613073.

POCKLINGTON Under 14s will play host to a 12-a-side tournament tomorrow morning at Percy Road.

The hosts will be joined by Driffield, Hessle, Towcester (Northamptonshire) and Ormskirk (Lancashire) for the round-robin style tournament.

All the fun will commence at 10.30am.

CONGRATULATIONS to Harrogate's team manager Graham Siswick, whose tireless efforts have been rewarded by the club.

At the Claro Roaders' annual dinner, Siswick was presented with the first-ever President's Trophy for Outstanding Service.

However, sources at the club have revealed Siswick has already dented his trophy - although it is not quite on the scale of when Dean Richards and Jim Jeffries played football with and drunk out of the Calcutta Cup in Edinburgh after one Scotland v England clash.

It appears a sudden gust of wind sent the prize tumbling from the top of a car, leaving it slightly the worse for wear.
