THE January sales are upon us and you may be looking at the mobile phone market in search of a bargain. However, before you commit yourself, York Trading Standards offers the following advice to anyone looking for a mobile phone.
Trading Standards Manager Elizabeth Levett says: "The mobile phone market can be confusing as there are so many phones, charges and different networks to choose from. You should be prepared to shop around to make sure you get the best deal for your needs."
Choosing a network
Network reception for mobile phones varies depending on the area in which you are using the phone. Most stores have coverage maps but it is wise to check with family and friends to see if they have encountered any problems.
Costs
A mobile phone package involves two costs. 1) The handset, and 2) The tariff or call payment system. Remember cheaper phones often mean that the costs are recouped by more expensive call charges.
Payment Plans
Pay-as-you-go/Pre pay
You pay for the phone and connection. No monthly bills but call costs can be high and you will need to keep topping up.
May be best for occasional users.
Contract
You buy the phone and sign a contract for at least a year. Bills paid monthly. Phones are usually cheap or free, but you are tied into the deal for at least a year. May work out cheapest for business users.
All-inclusive
You pay in advance for the first year's line rental and some monthly calls in return for a big discount. There is a large initial layout and notice is required to leave the network. May be better for heavy users.
Whatever option you choose, the law states that goods or services must be of satisfactory quality and fit for their purpose. This means that the telephone should withstand normal use for a reasonable period of time. Make sure you tell the store of the areas where you will be using the telephone and ask whether there have been any problems with the reception for the network. Never sign any contract until you have read the whole document.
To make sure that you get the best deal:
- Know the time at which you are most likely to be using the phone
- Know which type of phone you will be calling - landlines, other mobiles, abroad etc.
- Where you will probably be when you are making the majority of the calls.
