NEW Zealander Andy Duncan won York Fencing Club's sixth International York Express poule unique epee competition at Arch-bishop Holgate's School.

He just edged out last year's winner, 16-year-old Hugo Smith from Bolton. Garry Longthorn (Liverpool) was third with York's Duncan Smart fourth.

Kate Manson from the Shetland Islands won the special award for the women's competition while Karl Venneman, from Munster, Germany, received the special veterans' award.

Other York entrants included Miles Middlebrook, Mike Watts and Rebecca Elliott, 14, who was in her first competitive event.

The six-hour long competition saw all the competitors taking each other on for the York-based Merlin Enterprises- sponsored trophy.

YFC's next competition is the Young Star foil tournament in April at Archbishop Holgate's where the club meets on Wednesdays. For further details ring 0113 2688825.
