HAVING lost a swathe of green belt land to build Fosslands Village, we were told that more had to go to build the new North York Fire Station. Despite strong objections we were advised that the only place it could be built to meet Home Office requirements was at Earswick.
I now find that the fire appliances leaving the station have to turn left along the A1237 towards Hopgrove and go round the roundabout and in returning pass the entrance to the fire station having done 1.2 miles.
The distance between the nearest available plot of land at Monks Cross to the entrance of the fire station is, you've guessed it, 1.2 miles. It seems that councillors and planning officers have been conned into accepting a fire station next to houses in the village when it could easily have been built elsewhere.
And if the fire service was so keen to reach any incident in the shortest possible time, why did they not build it along the road at the next roundabout when they would have saved over half a mile on every journey?
