SERVICE provider NTL yesterday launched what it calls "the Ferrari of fast Internet" in York and Harrogate.

The one Megabit service is initially aimed at the £600 million company's 20,000 residential customers, split evenly between the two communities at 10,000 apiece.

They are among the first NTL customers in the country being offered the superfast service which, says the company, can slash the 8.3 seconds it takes to call up a typical 50k web page with a standard 56k telephone dial up to half a second. Cost of the one Megabit service: £49.99 per month.

But, claims NTL, both York and Harrogate each have a potential to link up 32,000 homes to the "Ferrari" product, benefiting from its regional fibre-optic cable network.

Those who want to join NTL to "netsurf" for the first time might have to pay more, with a basic phone and digital TV package at £14.99, plus £75 one-off for installation of phone, TV and boadband, plus the £49.99 per month one Megabit fee. Initial total: £139.98.

However, there are lower-speed options of 512kb at £25 per month or 128 kb at £14.99 per month, both faster than the average 56k dial up.
