I WAS pleased to read that City of York Council is considering a new Park&Ride service for York District Hospital (Park&Ride suggested for hospital 'corridor', March 7). It seems to me to be the most sensible solution to the parking problems at the hospital, and would certainly ease congestion on Wigginton Road.

I suggested to First York more than 12 months ago that the Rawcliffe Park&Ride could be routed via Gillygate and the hospital instead of going back through Clifton, but I was told this would not be feasible.

I am sure many staff at the hospital would use the service (perhaps they could be encouraged to do so with concessionary fares) and as a regular visitor as an outpatient and in a pastoral capacity, I would welcome such a service.

Rev Helen Harrell,

...I WOULD like to ask York's highways department why it closed Vyner Street and Fountayne Street.

On Wednesday I came down Wigginton Road at 2.30pm and it took me about 20 minutes to get from Crichton Avenue to the lights, just past the hospital.

The tailback and congestion was caused by cars trying to get into the hospital, the tailback was horrendous as it is every day.

The closing of these two streets only helps to add to the mess.

When are we going to get the multi-story car park for the hospital that should have been built even before the hospital opened?

How the ambulances manage to get through in an emergency is anybody's guess, sheer willpower and good luck I think.

Mrs Dale,

Highthorn Road, York.
