STONEBOW in York has been the site of major redevelopment over the past few decades as illustrated by these photographs.
The large picture of Stonebow in 1963 shows the foundations for the much-criticised Stonebow House.
At the rear of the site is Central Methodist Church and on the right St Saviour's Church, now the ARC archaeological cente.
The picture below, shows the official opening of Stonebow to traffic by the Lord Mayor of York, Ald F Brown, in 1955.
The boarded-up building to the left of the picture is now the Northern Wall pub with Fossgate to the right of it.
Layerthorpe Bridge is in the background of the second picture below, taken in 1955. The white buildings to the right are no longer there, but the Black Swan pub can just be seen behind them. Our penultimate picture portrays the changing face of Stonebow, showing the building which used to be Henlys Garage, but is now Wynsors World of Shoes.
Our last photograph, which is undated, shows St Saviourgate with Whip-Ma-Whop-Ma-Gate in the foreground. Again St Saviour's Church and the Central Methodist Church can be seen.
