READERS may have noticed that one lane of Huntington Road southbound has been closed at its intersection with the Monkgate roundabout. This is a trial closure to see if it helps pedestrians cross this road more safely and easily.
While on the surface this appears a laudable scheme, it poses the question why has the council gone straight to this traffic-jamming exercise without seeing if a proper pedestrian crossing would be better?
There is no doubt having to cross only one lane is better than having to negotiate two, but what do pedestrians do when they reach the traffic island and have to face northbound traffic leaving the roundabout? Would it not be more sensible to provide a full road crossing with central refuge further down Huntington Road?
