DURING the debate about this year's City of York Council budget, there was a constant stream of news, prompted by Steve Galloway, on suggested savings. Any sensible organisation "thinks the unthinkable" during the budget process and then discards many of the proposals. I applaud Steve Galloway's desire for public consultation, but this is not assisted by indulging in scare stories.
Let's have a mature debate on important issues. It is unfortunate the Liberal Democrats' big idea was to set up a scrutiny committee on budget matters. How much would such an exercise cost?
It would have been interesting to see them come up with their own detailed costed budget proposals instead of merely tinkering at the margins.
