POLICE are investigating alleged misappropriation of funds at a Selby charity, it was revealed today.
Detectives launched the inquiry at Selby District Advocacy, which is based in Ousegate, after reports that money had gone missing.
It is understood the sum of money allegedly missing is several thousand pounds.
Detective Sergeant Dave Pegg, of Selby CID, confirmed they were investigating the alleged incident following a complaint made by the committee.
Kitty Heddle, chairperson of the Selby District Advocacy management committee, said: "I went to a recent committee meeting, which the police attended, to be told that money had allegedly disappeared.
"I was as shocked as everyone else."
The advocacy service was set up three years ago by Selby Association of Voluntary Services.
Selby AVS co-ordinator Gill Cashmore said: "We managed the service for just over 12 months. It then became independent with its own management committee."
Selby Advocacy is funded by North Yorkshire County Council social services. It recruits and trains volunteer advocates to speak on behalf of people in need or with disabilities or learning difficulties.
A spokesman for county council social services said: "We are aware of the police investigation, and we will be seeking to ensure the continuation of the advocacy service in Selby."
