THE centrepiece of York's celebration of the Queen's Golden Jubilee could be a "Commonwealth market" in the city centre.
The event would be based on York's successful Continental market, and would sell a variety of goods from Commonwealth countries or with a Commonwealth theme.
If approved, the market will be held in Parliament Street on June 3 and 4.
The city will also mark the Queen's 50th anniversary on June 3 with a range of live musical events throughout York, including York Music Live in Parliament Street from noon. Bands will also play in Hull Road Park and West Bank Park.
A city centre parade will be followed by a royal salute at noon and live music in the Museum Gardens. City of York Council events officer Liz Topi said the authority's role would be to co-ordinate events.
She said: "This is an opportunity to do something community-based."
